A: The more I think about it, the more aggravated I get about my daughter's [middle school creative writing] teacher telling her that her time travel story was "too far-fetched."
B: That makes me so sad. One of my many jobs is teaching week-long creative writing workshops in schools, and I once had a VERY strained conversation with a group of teachers from a School For The Gifted, when they asked me what my plans were ...for "dealing with the over-use of fantasy in children's stories," and that if I wanted the children (fourth graders) writing "real literature" I'd have to "nip the fantasy problem in the bud."
Me!: I believe the only possible correct answer to the question of overuse of fantasy in school writing courses is to say to the teachers, "Well, I guess I can encourage them to write thinly veiled autobiographical accounts of their experiences with oral sex."
