Check out this bit from the so-called 53percent tumblr
![]()
In addition to the elementary math error the 53percent tumblr is based on (53% is not part of 99%??) this image is especially annoying, as it is frequently being reposted as a positive example of a kid who isn't a whiner demanding things she doesn't deserve., and who had nothing handed to her. She's no smelly hippy who expects handouts. She did it all by herself!
Well, except for the heavily subsidized tuition of a state university—you know, the very thing that the conservative forces backing the 53tumblr would destroy.
I've seen four different conversations about this image, and every time someone brings up the fact that this woman was in fact handed about two-thirds of her college tuition by the government, the response from the re-poster is generally either a pure meltdown (ranting about "diversity" and "engineering departments" being "cut") or idiot evasions about how they see lots of people with a sense of entitlement...as if this girl doesn't have one when she sucks up college from the public trough and then declares that she paid for it herself.
It's a perfect personality test—if you read the text in the image and think to yourself, "Yeah! Bootstraps! She did it without help!" you're a gullible moron.
And that's leaving aside the "decent grades" scholarships, which suggests that the scholarships are really for largely for something else—her gender, ethnicity, place of birth, choice of major, parental membership in union or fraternal society, etc.
