The Shirley Jackson Award nominees have been announced, and there are some surprises (Miskowski, Biancotti). In a membership or popular vote award, I'd think, "Aha, someone gifted in the art of kissing ass!" but with a juried award I'm actually interested to read the stuff now. No love for me this year, save that I'm a small part of Supernatural Noir in the anthology category.

Publishers Weekly reviews The Navidad Incident, one of my favorite dayjob books, saying Despite ghosts, mysterious disappearances, and magical priestesses, the book is as much a leisurely commentary on post-colonial dictatorships as it is a work of magical realism. Readers are treated to rambling digressions on topics like the importance of buses in Navidadian life or Guili's past history and love life. Still, Ikezawa's newest (after A Burden of Flowers) has its own strange, meandering charm, giving readers a glimpse into the legacy of colonization from a Japanese perspective."

World Book Night is tonight. Never heard back from them, so I guess they didn't like my ideas. Also something I noticed, this guy who flipped out last year about WBN quietly changed his blog post. It reads now, in part "The Thought Police in the 1930s were educated enough to burn quite a wide selection of books..." That clause originally read "Hitler and his goose-stepping morons were educated enough to burn quite a wide selection of books..."

If your panelists only read spines, I have no use for you. The last time I bought a spine was January 2011. It still has the bookstore sale-tape on it, which means I have never opened it.

The same month that I bought my last spine, I got my Kindle. I have read more than a hundred books on it in — what? — 16 months. I bought 2 books and downloaded 2 samples this last weekend.

In future, please tell me up front — in the program listing — the format that your reviewers read. If they read eBooks, I shall listen. If they read only spines, I’ll pass.
