Should Fandom Be Destroyed?

At this point it's an open question to me, or at least I don't have the time now to write a long post entitled "Fandom Must Be Destroyed." Anyway, Exhibit A, the context for which is, of course, the Readercon harassment policy issue:

Since I don't run program any more, I won't be in the position to blackball anyone, nor would I. But this issue is under discussion on the SMOFs (convention-runner's) list. And I can't speak for them, some of whom are in that position.

What I'm saying is that I help throw a big party (5 or 6 or 8 times a year) so that newbie authors can become big name authors one day. And it's generally considered rude to curse at your host & her guests.

Three quick notes:

1. Plenty of "newbie" SF authors have become big name authors without the assistance of fandom. Outside of the SF field, that number approaches, oh, 100 percent.

2. "Newbie" is one of the most loathesome words I've ever heard.

3. Harlan Ellison's "Xenogenesis" is a generation old. Is it time to start collecting new anecdotes?
