This poor guy over at Bookslut stopped reading science fiction as a teen in order to be cool. He writes, in part, "I left it behind, for fucking John Updike and Alice Munro. What a fool I was. Updike and Munro aren't bad, not at all, but my (useless) striving for coolness meant that left visions of what could be behind and replaced them with merely what is and was."
I don't know if I've ever seen "striving for coolness" and "Alice Munro" so close together like that. Well, I'm confused! What kind of reading is cool? Hell, you tell me:
*Jack Kerouac is excluded from this poll to make it fair for all the other choices.
