Baked Alaska

I swear this is not turning into a foodie blog.

As someone who grew up in the 1970s, I necessarily was exposed to a lot of 1950s nostalgia. Grease, Happy Days, that sort of thing. And people back then apparently ate a lot of basked Alaska. I was always very interested in trying one, but where the hell does one get one? By the 1970s, they weren't normally served in the diners and restaurants to which I had access.

In 2008, when I moved here, I found Ici, which is fine. Actually, it's a bit more expensive and a bit more precious than I like—I had come from Somerville/Cambridge, which has many great quality ice cream shops—but it's close and fun and microadventures happen there. And they sell baked Alaska. But of course I still never had one. It's difficult to buy a twenty-dollar cake for one. But I'd seen one! I knew they existed, for real, I just never had a bite.

Until today.

A semi-late birthday thing, organized by Olivia. People came by (Nicole, Peter, Jason, Erin, Sean, Ayumi, Yuki, Mandy, Kurt, Jody, Molly—people like to see their names in print and at this late date I'm not typing in LJ handles anymore!) and we tried a medium baked Alaska—passionfruit and orange flavor. We put it in the oven, cranked to 500 degrees, for two minutes, and it was soooo crazily good.

Worth a thirty-something year wait. Will eat again. If you're ever around, and there are at least six of you, get one of these things!
